Two Awards They Got Right
Two Academy Awards that made me happy last night:
- Best documentary feature: Taxi to the Dark Side, by Alex Gibney and Eva Orner
- Best original song: “Falling Slowly” from Once, by Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova
I haven’t seen Taxi to the Dark Side yet, though it’s on my short list. But the topic is of utmost importance so I’m glad the film was recognized — awards tend to give things legs.
I’m glad “Falling Slowly” was nominated and that it won over the Enchanted pablum it shared the slate with. The song was the highlight of a curious indie flick that otherwise didn’t move me a lot. I was surprised a few weeks ago when I found myself humming the song, trying to remember the words, and unable to figure out where I’d heard it or what the title was. I had to search Google for a phrase from the song in order to find out that it was from a movie Julie and I had seen a week or two earlier.
As for the other big winners, I’ve only seen Michael Clayton and Charlie Wilson’s War, so I don’t have much of an opinion. Tilda Swinton was good in Michael Clayton. Phillip Seymour Hoffman is always good.
And, since I liked the music as a kid, I kind of want to see the winner for animated short, Peter & the Wolf.
