Daily Measurements

Some distances I counted today. In each case, one step = the distance between each step of my good leg.

  • 25 steps from the coffee counter in Smith Hall to the door of Smith hall
  • 10 steps to cross Broadway at the crosswalk
  • 33 steps from the crosswalk to the front door of the Education building
  • 10 steps from the Ed. building door to the elevator
  • 36 steps from the elevator to my office door

I find I count steps a lot while walking on crutches because walking on crutches requires so much concentration. You can’t look around, especially if you’re in any way tired. If you zone out and look up or around too much you’ll screw up the cadence or won’t lift something up enough and risk tripping, badly. So I look at my feet or just ahead of them for the most part and to keep my mind occupied I count the steps (it’s interesting how much of an impulse I have to look up at the sounds around me).

Also, it’s a pain in the ass to walk all those steps into Smith to get coffee in a thermos. I need to start bringing it from home or something.
