Boom: On Tomorrow’s Nerd/Punditry Event Infogasm
So tomorrow, Tuesday 15 January 2008, will feature both a Stevenote at the Macworld Expo 2008, and the Michigan State Dem and GOP presidential primary.
What this means for, say, tens of thousands of mac/tech geeks like me is that we will be completely distracted all morning by following along at the multiple sites live-blogging from the Stevenote.
What this means for, say, hundreds of thousands of political news junkies like me is that we’ll be distracted late afternoon and early evening (at least on the left coast) as the political coverage ramps up and the returns are reported, analyzed, and dissected.
And so for dual-purpose nerds like me, it’s a veritable infogasm of Stuff to Watch. And they say the information age heralded a new era of increased worker productivity.
Now, it’s true that due to intra-party squabbles, the Dem primary in Michigan is a non-topic, though the GOP primary should be interesting. But still, this is no Iowa or New Hampshire kind of event.
The Stevenote however is the first Macworld keynote since the announcement of the iPhone a year ago. There are, as usual, a lot of rumors (and even leaks?), predictions, and hype, hype, hype, hype, hype. It will be quite the talk of the blogs and IRC. Hopefully my morning meeting will go by quickly so I can go back to chatting about the latest up-to-the-moment announcement while concurrently reloading half a dozen webpages reporting on the event.
Later in the day, if the keynote content was compelling enough, I may even watch the online version at apple.com just to get a sense of the tone of the presentation and a feel for the audience reaction.
Sigh. It’s time-consuming to be a nerd (e.g. info-consumer) in an info-rich world.
